This November 12 Years a Slave Oscar winner Steve McQueen creates and directs five original and timely movies for Amazon Prime Video's new anthology film series, Small Axe.

The stories are set from the late 1960s to the mid 1980s and tell personal tales from London's West Indian community, whose lives have been shaped by their own force of will despite rampant racism and discrimination.

In Mangrove, Letitia Wright stars as Altheia Jones-LeCointe a leading member of the British Black Panther Movement and Shaun Parkes as restaurant owner, Frank Crichlow, whose Notting Hill Caribbean eatery is subjected to continuous police harassment and raids. A peaceful protest leads to them and seven other people being wrongly arrested for incitement to riot and finding themselves defendants in the highly publicised 1970's Mangrove Nine trial.

Lovers Rock sees Amarah-Jae St. Aubyn and Micheal Ward meet and fall for each other at a reggae house party in early 1980s West London.

Red, White and Blue is based on another true story and sees John Boyega as Leroy Logan, a forensic scientist wanting to join the Metropolitan Police Force to change the racist system from within after his father is brutally beaten by the police in 1983.

The fourth film follows young Brixton DJ (played by Sheyi Cole) who is incarcerated during the Brixton Uprising of 1981. In prison he confronts his past and sees a path to his future in the true story of award-winning writer, Alex Wheatle.

And in Education, a bright 12-year-old boy named Kingsley Smith (Kenyah Sandy) is sent to a school for those with "special needs", which is really an unofficial segregation policy at play, until a group of West Indian women take matters into their own hands.

These films may be from another time, and another country, but their themes of systemic racism, discrimination, people of colour striving for equity and equality, the power of the people and the struggle against tyranny, are all too timely and relevant.

The film series title takes its name from the lyrics and meaning behind Bob Marley's 1973 song, Small Axe - "If you are the big tree, we are the small axe. Ready to cut you down, to cut you down".

A new film will debut every Friday from November 20 to December 18, 2020, so enjoy.
