James McBride's acclaimed 2013 novel The Good Lord Bird gets the small screen treatment this October courtesy of Showtime.
The seven-part limited series stars Ethan Hawke as abolitionist John Brown, told from the viewpoint of a fictional newly freed teenage boy named 'Henry "Onion" Shackleford' (Joshua Caleb Johnson) as he follows Brown on a holy crusade to end slavery and finds himself part of the famous 1859 raid on the Army depot at Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, an instigating event that started the American Civil War.
The title of the series refers to the ivory-billed woodpecker, whose feathers John Brown believes brings him good luck.
