The BABs - Best Advertising Billboard Awards 2019...

Now that 2020 is in full swing, it's time to crown the winners of Daily Billboard's coveted BAB Awards. Move over Golden Globes, out of the way Oscars, don't even think it Grammys, here are the winners of 2019's Best Advertising Billboard Awards. For the ninth time in the past decade we recognise the most eye-catching, innovative, visually creative and clever outdoor ads and out-of-home gimmicks that have made a spectacle in the streets and skies of Los Angeles these past twelve months. Without further ado, let's get on with the show.

Orangutan Our Planet billboard
First up is the BAB Award for best special extension billboards and that honour goes to Netflix's natural world documentary series, Our Planet.

These beautiful animal cut-out billboards remind us that nature is glorious, whether the creatures are climbing, splashing, or speeding through their environment. These stunning billboards for the subscription streaming service really were a visual treat this year.

Other close contenders in this category this year were these Frozen II movie billboards, this billboard for The Mandalorian and these billboards for the second season of The Masked Singer.

Robot Chicken season 10 ticker tape billboard
'KISS'. Keep it simple, stupid. That's what they tell marketeers all the time (along with 'Sex sells') and it looks like the folks at Adult Swim were listening with this celebratory season ten ticker tape billboard for the stop-motion animated series, Robot Chicken.

What Daily Billboard loves about this eye-catching gimmick is that it's so simple, it couldn't have cost that much money to create or install (someone glued some shiny, different colour metallic foil strips to the vinyl) and it's highly effective at standing out and creating a spectacle.
Other more expensive contenders for this installation award were these Once Upon a Time in Hollywood neon sign billboards and this moving arm billboard for Missing Link.

Jimmy Kimmel For accidental consideration billboard
More and more television shows and movies seem to be using out-of-home media to campaign for industry awards consideration, so making yourself seen is becoming more and more important in a crowded city skyline.

This year late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel really stood out campaigning for Emmy consideration with this 'For your accidental consideration' billboard, which is a spoof of the key art for the sixth season of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (the current reigning champion of late-night variety shows).

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but the sheer audacity and hilarity of this billboard creative along the Sunset Strip in June and repeated when he was an Emmy nominee in August, makes Jimmy Kimmel Live and his marketing team a winner.

Other notable entries in this category include these sophomore season Fleabag FYC billboards, this Fyre documentary Emmy nominee billboard and these second season consideration billboards for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

Game of Thrones final season 8 billboard
Over the past few years the television landscape has become even more competitive with new streaming services offering a plethora of original content, whilst cable channels started spending more and more on the production values of their shows.

To say there's been an explosion of television shows advertising in the city skyline is no exaggeration, but there was one series that was the most anticipated of the year and that was the final season of HBO's fantasy epic, Game of Thrones.

Fans may not have been satisfied by the outcome of the fantasy drama, but there was no way they could have been disappointed with these season eight teaser billboards for Game of Thrones, making everyone wonder who would claim the Iron Throne of Westeros.

Would it be the 'Mother of Dragons', scheming 'Cersei Lannister', the mysterious 'Night King', the noble 'Jon Snow', or one of the other myriad and complex characters from the show?

In addition to special extension cut-outs and standard billboards featuring all these key characters, the throne later morphed into the spiky face of a dragon, making this an epic, unmissable outdoor campaign.

Rocketman movie billboard
Naysayers constantly heard the death of cinema on a monthly basis it seems, but you wouldn't be able to tell that in the skies of La La Land with all the theatrical release campaigns that fill the sprawling skyline all year long.

One collection of outdoor ads really stood out in 2019, and those were the Rocketman movie billboards.

Fans of Elton John could instantly recognize the iconic singer from the flamboyant costumes, whilst others could easily understand that this is a film was musical biopic at a glance. Obviously it also helped that this campaign also had some extra sparkle to it.

Other feature films that rose to the occasion with their outdoor advertising this year were these IT Chapter Two movie billboards, these billboards for The Lion King and these Joker movie billboards.

Fernish sofa billboard
This past year there really was a very clear winner when it came to an advertiser just using words and typography to sell their products and services, and that winner is Fernish.

The furniture subscription service really had fun with its advertising throughout the summer months and really stood out with this tongue-in-cheek ad copy.

Carrie Bradshaw Stella Artois billboard
In the world of alcoholic beverages, Daily Billboard thinks this campaign from Stella Artois had real standout featuring iconic characters from the big and small screen and supporting a Super Bowl commercial where Jeff Bridges 'The Dude' from The Big Lebowski met Sarah Jessica Parker's 'Carrie Bradshaw' from Sex and the City.

Both characters traded in their signature cocktails, changing up the usual for a refreshing brew from the Belgian beer brand.

Other contenders for a BAB Award in this drinks category include these Peroni Birra Beautifully billboards and these Vita Coco Impossible to hate coconut water billboards.

Tyler Creator Shot on iPhone On Tour billboard
In the world of music it was Apple that really captured the spirit of performing on stage and behind-the-scenes backstage this year, with their Shot on iPhone On Tour billboard campaign.

The billboards featured edgier, rising stars like Lizzo, Tyler, The Creator, FKA twigs, Travis Scott, IDLES and more, but retains the user-generated feel of earlier Shot on iPhone campaigns and cleverly connects Apple's iPhone with music, either for playing songs or taking your a fun night out to a concert and capturing the memories

Other music-themed campaigns up for consideration were the Grammys sound-wave billboards from last January.

Giant DKNY Halsey Fall 2019 billboard
And finally in the catwalk world of fashion, there was one ad creative this year that really stood head and shoulders above all other fashion billboards, this giant-sized billboard featuring singer Halsey for DKNY. This striking super-sized billboard along the Sunset Strip last fall shone brightly and made a real impact.

Other stylish brands up fro consideration this year were Calvin Klein's I speak my truth in #MyCalvins campaign and FIGS scrubs billboards.

And there you have it, the BAB Awards winners of 2019. What do you think of these category choices? Are they truly worthy recipients of these accolades, or do you think another campaign or billboard is more deserving? Don't be afraid to speak your mind.

It's been an exciting and busy twelve months, so keep up the marvelous work and Daily Billboard looks forward to celebrating all the eye-catching, attention-grabbing and head-turning outdoor ads that will fill the city skies throughout 2020.

On January 22, 2020, Daily Billboard celebrates ten years in the business of chronicling L.A.'s best billboards, so here's to many more fruitful years to come.
