Can audiences current demand for nostalgia help YouTube Red score its first mainstream breakthrough with the continuing saga of The Karate Kid movies from the 1980s with a new TV spin-off, Cobra Kai.

The online subscription platform which allows viewers to watch YouTube videos and original content ad free recently kicked off the year with Step Up: High Water, a series continuation of the dance film franchise, but can the continuing rivalry between 'Daniel LaRusso' and 'Johnny Lawrence' 30 years after the events of the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament prove to be YouTube Red's own House of Cards.

The once bullied 'Daniel' (again played by Ralph Macchio) who was trained by martial arts expert and janitor, 'Mr. Miyagi' (Pat Morita), to help defend himself, now lives in the affluent Encino hills and owns a string of car dealerships in the valley, whilst his old adversary 'Johnny' (William Zabka) hopes to turn his life around by reopening the infamous Cobra Kai karate dojo.

Now their paths cross once again, reawakening old enmities and leading to a new generation of karate kids.

These giant-sized, standard and special extension cut-out billboards were snapped along Sunset Boulevard and Wilshire Boulevard from April 25 to April 29, 2018.

Significantly it's the first time that Daily Billboard has seen YouTube use gimmicks like special extension cut-outs on its outdoor ads to help them stand out.

The trio of original movies were released in 1984, 1986 and 1989 respectively (followed by 1994's The Next Karate Kid starring Hilary Swank and Pat Morita), and fans of the film franchise can also check out these billboards for The Karate Kid remake from 2010, which starred Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan.

With TV shows and films being revived, remade and reimagined in recent years, from the likes of Will & Grace, Roseanne, Lost in Space, Fuller House, Dynasty and the Gilmore Girls, and more nostalgic fan-favourites like Charmed, Magnum P.I. and Cagney & Lacey on the way, can Cobra Kai kick things into high gear for YouTube Red this year.
