Warner Bros. Studios are obviously hoping that his World War II drama will be an epic box office smash, as these billboards for Dunkirk have invaded the skies of L.A. in a big way.

This tale of survival follows the real-life evacuation of over 338,000 soldiers from the British Empire, Belgium, France and Canada who were cut off and surrounded by German forces, bombed and strafed by enemy fighters, at the harbour and on the beaches of Dunkirk, France, from May 26 to June 4, 1940.
On the first day only 7,669 of the stranded Allied soldiers were evacuated, but by the end of the eighth day a hastily assembled fleet made up of 800 fishing boats, merchant marine boats, pleasure boats and lifeboats rescued 338,226 men, becoming known as the 'Miracle of Dunkirk'.
The WWII film stars newcomer Fionn Whitehead and the likes of Tom Hardy, Kenneth Branagh, Mark Rylance, Cillian Murphy, James D'Arcy and even One Direction's Harry Styles.

This abundance of movie billboards were photographed around the streets of L.A., including along Sunset Boulevard, Pass Avenue, Pico Boulevard, Vine Street, Highland Avenue, Santa Monica Boulevard, La Brea Avenue and Westwood Boulevard, from June 13 to July 10, 2017.
This wide variety of ad creatives really give a sense of the dire circumstances the brave soldiers faced on the beaches and the odds against them, the film's perspective from land, sea and air.

Only time and audiences will tell if this survival story about the early days of World War II will be an early Oscar contender for the filmmaker.

Fans of the writer and director can also enjoy these movie billboards for The Dark Knight trilogy, these Interstellar movie billboards and these Inception movie billboards.
Meanwhile WWII aficionados can also check out these Fury movie billboards, these Unbroken movie billboards and these film billboards for The Monuments Men.
