For their series launch billboard the funny guys of the new HBO comedy are replicating Albert Watson's iconic portrait of the man that brought the world the Mac, iPod, iPad, iPhone and much more besides, and which graced the cover of Walter Isaacson's 2011 authorised Steve Jobs autobiography.
This instantly recognisable imagery combined with the tagline 'where everyone wants to be an icon' really helps to convey what this comedy is all about, even if you don't know your apps from your alt tags.
With animated comedy credentials like Beavis & Butt-Head and Kind of the Hill, this live action show is actually inspired by Mike Judge's own experiences as a Silicon Valley engineer decades ago.
The eight episode series follows the adventures of a bunch of super-smart programmers, played by Kumail Nanjiani, T. J. Miller, Thomas Middleditch, Zach Woods and Martin Starr, all hoping to strike it rich with the next killer app or tech invention, to be the next Steve Jobs, Bill Gates or Mark Zuckerberg.
This clever ad creative was first spied along the Sunset Strip on March 12, with another billboard spotted further east along Sunset Boulevard at Fairfax Avenue and a vertical creative snapped on the side of the SLS Beverly Hills Hotel along La Cienega Boulevard on March 16, 2014.
Let's hope this satire of the modern day tech gold rush pushes the right buttons with audiences just like this billboard parody does.
