Noah movie billboards...

For all those living in L.A. these billboards for Russell Crowe's new movie Noah will have a certain irony considering the heavens literally opened this weekend, especially as they started to appear around the city skyline just before the storms hit (yes, L.A. may have escaped the U.S. polar vortex, but the weather is finally having its revenge and winter has arrived at last).

This year it appears that Biblical epics are back in vogue on the big screen, with Darren Aronofsky's Noah following Son of God and preceding Ridley Scott's Exodus this December, in a new wave of films based on the scriptures (you know movies are like buses, you wait ages for one and then they all come along at once).

Of course, it's not the first time that Hollywoodland has mined the Bible for popcorn blockbusters and it's certainly not the first time that religious groups will take issue with filmmakers interpretations of their holy stories.

From classics like Ben-Hur and The Ten Commandments, to more controversial fare like The Last Temptation of Christ, The Passion of Christ and even the big screen adaptation of the Jesus Christ Superstar musical, the Bible has been inspiration for many films.

This latest epic is inspired by the tale of Noah and his divine visions of an apocalyptic flood that would devastate to world, starring Russell Crowe in the titular role and joined by an all-star cast, with Jennifer Connelly as his wife, Logan Lerman as his son, Emma Watson as his adopted daughter and Sir Anthony Hopkins as his grandfather, 'Methuselah'.

The ad creative with Russell Crowe's face in profile was first spotted along Melrose Avenue on February 21, whilst the standard landscape version with the deluge splashing at Noah's heels was spotted along Beverly Boulevard on February 25 and the special extension billboard two days later along L.A.'s well traveled Sunset Strip.

It's funny, Noah is front and centre amidst the great flood, but his infamous ark with the animals two by two is not to be seen in these ad creatives.

Let's pray this new movie does prove to be epic and not a total washout.
