OSCAR WEEK: Up in the Air movie billboard...

Up in the Air movie billboard
Next Sunday is the 82nd Annual Academy Awards Ceremony, so to mark the special occasion it's OSCAR WEEK here at Daily Billboard, where we'll be showcasing a different nominated movie each day.

To kick off the proceedings is the billboard for one of my favourite films of 2009, Up in the Air. Daily Billboard thinks this billboard does a great job of conveying what the film is all about with the film's stars silhouettes standing in an airport terminal. It's very simple and clever and was photographed on Sunset Boulevard on September 24, 2009.

Up in the Air is nominated for six Oscars this year including Best Picture, Writing (Adapted Screenplay), Directing, two nods for Actress in a Supporting Role (one for Anna Kendrick and the other for Vera Farmiga) and finally George Clooney for Actor in a Leading Role.

Daily Billboard does hope this movie wins some Oscars as it seems to have been largely overlooked at the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Awards this year.

UPDATED: This second creative for the movie was snapped just in time for awards season in the same location on December 27, 2009.

FASHION WEEK: Chanel billboard...

Chanel fashion billboard April 2009This Chanel billboard in stylish black and white tones rounds off FASHION WEEK here at Daily Billboard.

With L.A.'s skyline constantly cluttered with so colourful and eye-catching adverts, sometimes the simple approach is the one that stands out the most.

This fashion billboard was photographed on April 25, 2009 along Sunset Boulevard.

FASHION WEEK: Guess billboard...

Guess fashion models billboard
This billboard for Guess Jeans, photographed on February 10, 2010 along the Sunset Strip in L.A., really stands out against that beautiful blue Californian sky, with the Hollywood Hills in the background.

Obviously it helps to have two attractive young models (regardless of what they are wearing) to grab your attention as you're driving or walking past.

FASHION WEEK: Armani Exchange billboard...

Armani Exchange fashion billboard
Daily Billboard finds Armani Exchange's approach to advertising with their constantly changing creative totally refreshing and it keeps L.A.'s skyline looking interesting, especially as they use the hottest models in their billboards.

This creative was photographed on La Cienega Boulevard at the corner of Santa Monica Boulevard on September 13, 2009.

UPDATED: Here's another sexy billboard from the same AX campaign snapped along Sunset Boulevard on September 24, 2009.

FASHION WEEK: Prada eyewear billboard...

Prada eyewear billboardSunglasses are a way of life here in L.A., from dodging the paparazzi to shielding your eyes after some delicate face surgery, so you can imagine that these fabulous shades from Prada's eyewear collection would be perfect for Hollywood's leading ladies.

This colourful and stylish billboard was photographed on Sunset Boulevard on April 13, 2008, which is like ancient history in the fashion world, but it's still an eye-catching advertisement for Prada.

FASHION WEEK: Calvin Klein Jeans Body billboards...

Calvin Klein hot fashion billboard
This sexy billboard is for fans of Calvin Klein Jeans, sultry actress Eva Mendes, buff male model Jamie Dornan and copious amounts of baby oil.

This image is a real head-turner and I'm sure it was responsible for stopping traffic (and probably causing all sorts of accidents) on Sunset Boulevard, just down the hill from boutique hotel Chateau Marmont.

The billboard was photographed on July 9, 2009 and is just part of a larger campaign using the attractive couple.

FASHION WEEK: Tom Ford eyewear billboard...

Tom Ford eyewear billboardAnyone who lives in California will tell you that sunglasses are not simply a fashion accessory, they are essential to live here and function safely in the sunshine.

That being said, that doesn't mean you can't look stylish and make a fashion statement at the same time as being practical.

This fabulous and provocative Tom Ford eyewear billboard, which was photographed on August 15, 2008 along Sunset Boulevard, really does catches your eye.

FASHION WEEK: Alexander McQueen snakes billboard...

Alexander McQueen snakes fashion billboard
Forget New York Fashion Week, today marks the start of Daily Billboard's very own FASHION WEEK extravaganza. Prepare to be wowed by style, beauty and fabulousness.

I hate snakes and I'm not much of a fashionista, but I do love good design and innovation, so I think this new Alexander McQueen billboard above his flagship L.A. store is simply stunning.

This wonderfully colourful billboard is a real attention-grabber with it's eye-catching imagery and it stands outs fantastically well on the corner of Melrose Avenue and Orlando Avenue in the heart of West Hollywood.

The photograph was taken on February 10, 2010, the day after a big thunderstorm, temporarily clearing the air of all that Los Angeles pollution, so the sky is crisp, clear and amazingly blue.

This billboard really is a remarkable advertisement for the designer fashion brand, but all I can think is that's money very well earned for that poor model wreathed in all those snakes.

The creativity of this billboard has even more poignancy with the death of the founder and iconic British designer of the unique fashion brand on Wednesday February 11, 2010. Visit Jason in Hollywood to see the tributes from Alexander McQueen's fans and admirers outside his flagship West Hollywood store.

MOVIE WEEK: 2012 John F Kennedy aircraft carrier billboard...

2012 JFK aircraft carrier movie billboard
What's not to love about the irony, albeit somewhat heavy-handed, of an aircraft carrier called USS John F Kennedy crashing into the White House, in this eye-catching billboard for near-future disaster movie, 2012.

The billboard was just one of several creative executions depicting famous landmarks being obliterated as the Earth suffers a global cataclysm and was photographed on Melrose Avenue on October 21, 2009.

MOVIE WEEK: Shutter Island movie billboard...

Shutter Island movie billboard
Daily Billboard really likes this billboard for Leonardo DiCaprio's new thriller that opens in the U.S.A. today, Shutter Island. It's well designed and has an element of intrigue and spookiness to it, plus it has the all important recognizable movie star headshot to catch the eye.

You have to love the colour combination of the red, white, black and blue and Daily Billboard thinks it's really simple and effective, making the poster site stand out amongst the crowded L.A. skyline.

The photograph was taken at the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and La Brea Avenue in L.A. on February 3, plus another along Highland Avenue on January 25, 2010.

MOVIE WEEK: G.I. Joe Storm Shadow billboard...

GI Joe Storm Shadow movie billboardThe first live-action G.I. Joe movie may have been just a lot of big guns, explosions and hammy acting nonsense (although surprisingly entertaining), but the billboards for the movie certainly were eye-catching.

This giant image of Cobra ninja operative, Storm Shadow, graced Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles on July 28, 2009.

Visit Jason in Hollywood for a movie review of G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and see original costumes, props and vehicles from the movie at Hollywood Movie Costumes and Props.

MOVIE WEEK: Sex and the City billboard...

Sex and the city movie billboard
Daily Billboard loves this shot of this Sarah Jessica Parker billboard for the first Sex and the City movie, mainly because the photograph was taken most appropriately in New York City in June 11, 2008.

Based on the hit series that shaped a generation of TV watchers and glamourised drinking cocktails, fabulous fashion, sex and shopping in NYC, this is a very confident billboard which screams style (and New York, with it's yellow cab in the background).

MOVIE WEEK: The Wolfman billboard...

The Wolfman movie billboard
Daily Billboard loves the simplicity of this imposing movie billboard for The Wolfman staring out over La Brea Avenue, which can be seen from Sunset Boulevard and beyond in L.A.

Photographed on February 3, 2010, you can see the scale of this massive advertisement on the side of this building by comparing it to the standard size billboard for the movie Legion below it.

MOVIE WEEK: Tron Legacy billboard...

Tron Legacy movie billboard
Daily Billboard can't tell you the excitement factor upon seeing this super-cool billboard for the forthcoming Disney movie, Tron Legacy.

Yes, 28 years later and Tron gets a sequel to the visually memorable 1982 movie featuring those cool glow-in-the-dark light-suits and cycles.

For Daily Billboard the movie evokes all kinds of nostalgic memories of classic computer games like Space Invaders, Frogger, Pac-Man and the like (oh, how times have changed).

So after seeing the Tron Legacy trailer from Comic-Con 2009, Daily Billboard can't wait to see the upgraded 3D version arriving in cinemas in the U.S.A. in December 2010.

This teaser billboard image was captured along Santa Monica Boulevard at Selby Avenue in L.A. on February 10, 2010.

Are you excited yet?

MOVIE WEEK: Valentine's Day billboard...

Valentine's Day film billboard
You knew it had to happen. First there was TV WEEK, now it's time for MOVIE WEEK.

And what could be more appropriate way to kick off the week on Valentine's Day than with a movie billboard of the same name?

Photographed along Wilshire Boulevard in L.A. on January 23, 2010 this montage billboard features the film's stars including Jessica Alba, Bradley Cooper, Eric Dane, Julia Roberts, Anne Hathaway, Jamie Foxx, George Lopez, Jennifer Garner, Ashton Kutcher, Shirley MacLaine, Topher Grace, Jessica Biel, Hector Elizondo, Patrick Dempsey, Taylor Lautner, Taylor Swift, Emma Roberts, Kathy Bates and Queen Latifah.

With all these disparate egos and character storylines, can even the director of Pretty Woman make this a watchable romantic comedy?

TV WEEK: Big Love season four billboards...

Big Love season 4 billboard
In honour of tomorrow's Valentine's Day festivities I couldn't resist bringing TV WEEK to a close with the season four billboard for polygamy drama Big Love.

The advertising creative features the shows main stars, Bill Paxton (as 'Bill Henrickson') and his wives Jeanne Tripplehorn (as 'Barb Henrickson', his first wife), recent Golden Globe winner Chloe Sevigny ('Nicolette Grant', Bill's second wife) and Ginnifer Goodwin (as 'Margene Heffman', his third and youngest wife).
Big Love season 4 HBO billboard
Even though I don't think I can bring myself to watch a drama about a fictional fundamentalist Mormon family practicing polygamy in Utah, I still think the show's premise makes for a visually arresting image.

The billboard was photographed on Melrose Avenue on December 31, 2009.

TV WEEK: The No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency billboard...

No 1 Ladies Detective Agency TV billboard
Towering over Sunset Boulevard this billboard for The No.1 Ladies Detective Agency TV series really did stand out on March 24, 2009.

Daily Billboard likes this billboard most for just how bright and colourful it is. It looks even more impressive against that fantastic Californian sky.

The series, based on the books by Alexander McCall Smith, starred Jill Scott as 'Precious Ramotswe'.

TV WEEK: The Vampire Diaries season one billboard...

The Vampire Diaries season 1 TV billboardRiding on the vampire-themed success of the likes of Twilight and True Blood, this billboard for The Vampire Diaries graced L.A.'s skyline on August 9, 2009.

Photographed on N Cahuenga Boulevard, the billboard features Paul Wesley as 'Stefan Salvatore', Nina Dobrev as 'Elena Gilbert' and Ian Somerhalder ('Boone' from LOST) as 'Damon Salvatore', Stefan's evil vampire brother.

Even though it's not as dramatic as the True Blood billboards, it still catches your eye, with a wistful alluring quality.

TV WEEK: V season one billboards...

V season 1 TV billboard
Daily Billboard loves this visually bold and arresting billboard for 2009's remake of the 80's classic sci-fi mini-series V.

The image has a really foreboding quality and was a great way to launch the re-imagined show to a new audience. Daily Billboard is still slightly bemused by why they spent so much money on heavy-weight advertising for the show only to air four episodes at the end of 2009, then retooling the series to return on March 30, 2010 in the U.S.A.

This impressive giant-sized billboard was snapped on Highland Avenue in Los Angeles on October 28, 2009.

TV WEEK: BBC America Top Gear billboard...

BBC America Top Gear TV billboardDaily Billboard was surprised to see this advertisement for British export, Top Gear, on corner of Santa Monica Boulevard and La Brea Avenue in L.A. on February 3, 2010.

It's safe to say Daily Billboard knows absolutely nothing about cars and never really watched the show in the U.K., but we're always cheered to see another BBC show make its way overseas.

The billboard has a fun and quirky eye-catching quality and Daily Billboard is interested to see how the show translates across the Atlantic. Just what will U.S. viewers make of presenters Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond featured in the billboard?

TV WEEK: Dexter season four billboard...

Dexter season 4 TV billboard
Michael C. Hall won a Screen Actors Guild Award and a Golden Globe for Best Actor this year for his role as Dexter in the fourth season of the TV show of the same name.

Daily Billboard loves this quirky, tongue-in-cheek creative campaign to promote the show. Knowing that his character is a murderer makes you look at the juice in his son's sippy cup and messy red marks on their clothes in a whole new light.

This massive building billboard was photographed along Sunset Boulevard in L.A. on September 6, 2009.

TV WEEK: RuPaul's Drag Race season two billboard...

Ru Paul's Drag Race TV billboard
It's TV WEEK here at Daily Billboard when we'll be showcasing a different advertising creative for a television show every day, so make sure to let me know which one you like the best.

To kick things off is this absolutely fabulous vision in hot pink and black, RuPaul's reality TV show Drag Race (just think America's Next Top Model without the skinny dumb models, and bitchy drag queens instead. It's entertaining viewing to say the least).

When DB saw this billboard for the second season of the show driving past on La Brea Avenue in Los Angeles on February 3, 2010, we just knew we needed it for Daily Billboard. It looks amazing against that deep blue Californian sky and really does catch your eye.

As the show's host, RuPaul, would say, "Gentlemen start your engines and may the best woman win!"

The Lovely Bones movie billboards...

The Lovely Bones movie billboard
This movie billboard is one of several creative executions for Peter Jackson's adaptation of the best-selling novel, The Lovely Bones.

I think this version is visually much stronger than the others as it features the film's star herself, Saoirse Ronan as the murdered ghost of Susie Salmon and Mark Wahlberg as her grieving father, Jack Salmon.

This billboard was photographed along Wilshire Boulevard in L.A. on January 23, 2010.

Visit Jason in Hollywood to find out why I was slightly underwhelmed by The Lovely Bones movie.

Caprica TV billboard...

Daily Billboard thinks this playful image for the new TV prequel series to the excellent sci-fi remake of Battlestar Galactica is fantastic.

DB loves the Adam and Eve connotations and of being tempted by forbidden fruit. The creative features actress Alessandra Torresani who plays Zoe Graystone.

This TV billboard for Caprica does a great job of appealing to the sci-fi community both young and old (although someone did remark they thought from a distance it looked rather like just another beauty advertisement).

It was photographed along Fairfax Avenue, just before Melrose Avenue, in L.A. on January 23, 2010.

The Dark Knight Joker movie billboard...

The Dark Knight Joker film billboard
This billboard starring Heath Ledger in his Oscar-Winning performance as The Joker in The Dark Knight movie was certainly an attention grabber when it graced the skies of L.A. along Santa Monica Boulevard on July 26, 2008.

His interpretation of The Joker was truly disturbing and this haunting image, with his eyes peering out at you, was even more arresting due to his untimely death before the release of the movie.
